About Infant Screening

Little Ears, Big Futures – Screen Early, Speak Brighter!

The World Health Organization (WHO) strongly recommends Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) within the first month of life to identify hearing loss early. Early detection and intervention ideally before 6 months can greatly improve speech, language, cognitive, and social development. Simple, non-invasive tests such as Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) and Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) are effective tools for early screening. Since hearing loss is one of the most common birth conditions and often occurs without family history WHO urges all countries to include UNHS in routine newborn care, train healthcare providers, and ensure timely follow-up and access to interventions like hearing aids or cochlear implants.

Infant Screening Hearing Tests

Types of Hearing Tests Used in Infant Screening

OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions)

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) testing checks the function of the inner ear, specifically the outer hair cells of the cochlea. It's a quick, non-invasive method often used for newborn hearing screening. At Global Speech & Hearing Clinic, we offer accurate OAE tests to detect hearing issues early and ensure timely care.

AABR (Automated Auditory Brainstem Response)

Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) testing evaluates how the hearing nerve and brainstem respond to sound. It’s a painless, non-invasive diagnostic method. At Global Speech & Hearing Clinic, we conduct precise AABR tests to detect neurological hearing issues early.

BERA (Brainstem Auditory Response Audiometry)

Brainstem Auditory Response Audiometry (BERA) testing evaluates how sound signals are transmitted from the ear to the brainstem. It’s a painless, non-invasive diagnostic method. At Global Speech & Hearing Clinic, we conduct accurate BERA tests to identify auditory nerve or brainstem-related hearing issues.

Impedance (I.A)

Impedance Audiometry (I.A) is a diagnostic test used to assess middle ear function and pressure regulation. It measures how the eardrum responds to changes in air pressure, helping detect fluid, perforations, infections, or Eustachian tube issues. At Global Speech & Hearing Clinic, we ensure accurate, timely evaluation for better hearing care.

Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)

Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) measures the softest tones a person can hear at different frequencies and intensities. It helps identify the type and degree of hearing loss whether conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. At Global Speech & Hearing Clinic, we conduct precise, personalized PTA to create customized treatment plans for optimal hearing health care.

Speech Audiometry

Speech Audiometry assesses how well a person detects and understands spoken language at various volume levels. It helps determine speech clarity, word recognition ability, and hearing aid effectiveness. At Global Speech & Hearing Clinic, we perform detailed speech testing to develop personalized therapy and hearing care solutions.

Special Test – SISI (Short Increment Sensitivity Index)

SISI testing identifies a person’s ability to detect small changes in sound intensity. It helps diagnose cochlear (inner ear) versus retrocochlear (nerve-related) hearing loss. At Global Speech & Hearing Clinic, we conduct precise SISI tests to tailor treatment strategies based on the nature and location of hearing impairment.

Special Test – Tone Decay

Tone Decay testing measures how long a person can sustain hearing a continuous tone. It helps detect auditory nerve fatigue, often indicating retrocochlear pathology. At Global Speech & Hearing Clinic, we use Tone Decay results to support early diagnosis and recommend further evaluation or treatment as needed.

Tinnitus Evaluation

Tinnitus Evaluation helps identify the nature, cause, and severity of ringing or buzzing in the ears. It guides the diagnosis of underlying hearing loss or neurological issues. At Global Speech & Hearing Clinic, we use advanced assessment tools to understand each patient’s tinnitus experience in depth.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) is a structured sound and counseling-based approach that retrains the brain to minimize the emotional and auditory impact of tinnitus. Our expert team designs personalized TRT programs to reduce distress, improve focus, and restore peace of mind through sound therapy and relaxation techniques.
